What office life looks like after the pandemic is still an open question. But real estate experts have no doubt there's going to be a surge in empty commercial real estate. In many cities, developers say some of the buildings can be redesigned to help address the affordable housing crisis. The practice is called "adaptive reuse" and it's been used before to revitalize urban cores in a slump. Now, some lawmakers are preparing legislation that would make it easy for a building that’s lost its purpose to find new life.
