5 Things to Watch at the 2021 Golden Globes Besides That Awkward ‘Emily in Paris' Nomination

Can Fey and Poehler pull off a socially distant show? Will Boseman win a posthumous award? Here are the storylines to watch at this year's Golden Globes.

Let's be honest. Nominating a guilty pleasure binge-watch like "Emily in Paris" (and snubbing some much better performances in the process) has taken some shine off the Golden Globe Awards this year. But couldn't we all use a few hours of escapism to watch very beautiful, very rich people in unaffordable clothes accept some glittering trophies? So, since you're likely to tune in anyway, here are five storylines to watch at the Golden Globes on Sunday.

Fey and Poehler Together Again... But Very Far Apart

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler at the 72nd Annual Golden Globe Awards.

Frequent Golden Globes hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are taking social distance to the max. The pair will host the first-ever bicoastal Golden Globes ceremony with Fey taking her cues from New York while Poehler will be in Beverly Hills. The pair sparkle when they're on stage together. It remains to be seen if they can capture that same magic thousands of miles apart.

A Posthumous Globe for Chadwick Boseman?

Chadwick Boseman died in 2020 following a battle with colon cancer.

Much of Hollywood is still reeling from the unexpected death of Chadwick Boseman, who died on August 28, 2020, following a battle with colon cancer. Boseman is considered an odds-on favorite to win a posthumous Globe for his last performance in "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom." If Boseman wins it could be a strong precursor to an Oscar nomination next month. The last man to win a Best Supporting Actor Oscar posthumously was Heath Ledger for his 2008 role in "The Dark Knight."

Will a Female Director Be Crowned?

Regina King attends the 76th Annual Golden Globe Awards.

Three women were nominated for best director at the Globes this year — the first time more than one has been nominated in a single year. The nominees are Chloe Zhao for “Nomadland,” Emerald Fennell for “Promising Young Woman” and Regina King for “One Night in Miami.” They will compete against David Fincher for “Mank” and Aaron Sorkin for “The Trial of the Chicago 7.”

Previously only five women had been nominated for Best Director in the Golden Globes' 77-year history.

Wait For It.... Can Hamilton Take Home a Globe?

Phillipa Soo, Christopher Jackson, Lin-Manuel Miranda and Anthony Ramos attend Lin-Manuel Miranda's final performance of "Hamilton" on Broadway.

If you've seen "Hamilton" either on Broadway or streaming on Disney Plus... you LOVE "Hamilton." But does it deserve a Golden Globe? Even some "Hamilton" fans have questioned whether the musical, which debuted on Broadway in August 2015, deserves a trophy in 2021 simply because it aired on a streaming service.

Will It Be a Big Night For 'Borat'?

Sacha Baron Cohen as "Borat" at the Opera House in Sydney, Australia.

Much to Rudy Giuliani's dismay, Sacha Baron Cohen could be a big winner Sunday night.

Baron Cohen scored three Golden Globe nominations, tying Jamie Foxx and Helen Mirren’s record for the most nods by a performer in a single year. Baron Cohen was a double-acting nominee, earning recognition in a comedy or musical acting for his return as Kazakh journalist Borat Sagdiyev in “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” and in drama acting for his portrayal as Abbie Hoffman in “The Trial of the Chicago 7.” Baron Cohen’s third nod was for producing the “Borat” sequel, a nominee for best musical or comedy.

"The Golden Globes" will air live Sunday, Feb.28, at 5 p.m. PT/8 p.m. ET on NBC.
